DEATHS – LINE OF DUTY

Ten (10) police officers have died in the line of duty thus far in 2016. That’s four (4) less police officer deaths than this time last year. Line of duty deaths are down 33% overall, auto related deaths are down 88%, and gunfire deaths are up 800%.

 

Eight (8) have died since the last meeting. Six (6) were killed by gunfire, one (1) was killed in a vehicle collision, and one (1) was killed in an aircraft collision.

 

During the past month, four (4) K-9s were killed in the line of duty.

  • Eight year old “JAG” Twin Rivers Unified School District Police Department, California, was struck and killed during a training exercise
  • Nine year old “KOBUS” Omaha Police Department, was shot to death while attempting to apprehend a barricaded suspect
  • Two year old “BETCHA” Rutland County Sheriff’s Office, Vermont, was accidentally struck and killed by his handler’s vehicle
  • Five year old “AREN” Port Authority of Allegheny County Police Department, Pennsylvania, was stabbed to death during the apprehension of a suspect

  • The meeting minutes for January 2016 were posted on the Association website by President Chavez

  1. HEART FIT FOR DUTY, KEPRA JACK
  • Heart fit is a medical practice
  • All their patients are law enforcement, public safety and their spouses
  • 50% of all heart attacks happen to people with normal cholesterol
  • Nearly 50% of police officers will die from heart disease within 5 years of retirement
  • Our priorities are:
    • Metabolic Disease
    • Cardio Vascular Risk Factors
    • Obesity
    • Tobacco Cessation
    • Advanced Lipids (Cholesterol Screening and Management)
    • Provide mental health evaluations to decrease suicide rates
    • Decrease line of duty deaths related to Cardio Disease
  • Heart Fit for Duty has two locations, one in Gilbert and one in Glendale

PRESIDENT, JIMMY CHAVEZ

  • AZ Troopers Association President, Vice President, Lobbyist and Recording Secretary met with governor Ducey on February 9, 2016, to present to him a challenge coin and discuss budget and pay increase
  • Dave Stopke was appointed as the District one Representative by President Chavez

  • We have one case pending
  • We settled the case with the Tucson dispatcher
  • PSPRS discussion
  • New legislation discussion, current retirees and people who were hired after 1994 will be affected
  • The current law has a fixed cap of $110,000

  1. OLD BUSINESS
  • The executive board discussed the UTS services and Ed Sharpensteen will be conducting the 6 months evaluation of the services to be reviewed by the Board at the upcoming April’s meeting
  • When we voted to take UTS it was for a trial period
  • We will do a cost analysis and review how many members have been using this new service
  • The Association will also evaluate the DPS EAP program, compare it to the UTS services and look for ways to improve the DPS EAP for members and employees.

 

  1. RING PRESENTATION
  • To be able to present rings is the highlight of being the president of the association
    • A 20 year ring was presented to Executive Vice President Bob Gilbert
    • A 20 year ring was presented to retired member Harold Hawes

 

  1. NTC CONFERENCE
  • The conference will be on March 20 – 23, if you have not yet registered please register online
  • Tim Kvochick ordered new shirts and a new association challenge coin

 

  1. MEMBERSHIP DRIVE
  • The association has been offering a 12 month membership for everyone at the department, the executive board decided to terminate the 12 months membership drive with the exception of the academy recruitment
  • The website is still being worked on and the booklets not completed yet.

 

  1. NEW BUSINESS
  2. REQUEST FOR FUNDING
  • Motion to fund up to $2,500 to send one of the agency’s honor guard members to Washington DC for the police week by Brian Turner, 2nd by mike Tarango. Motion carries
  • Motion to fund $550 for the annual Telecommunication’s Week by Vian Gorgis, 2nd by Gregg Girard. Motion carries.
    • Central OpComm – $250
    • Northern OpComm – $150
    • Southern OpComm – $150
  • Motion to fund $880 for the 15th Annual Arizona Peace Officers Memorial Charity Gold Tournament on April 30th by Jim Staton, 2nd by Ken Nelson. Motion passes
  • Request from the agency to fund the refreshments for the award ceremonies. Motion to fund $200 for the promotional ceremony by Bob Gilbert, 2nd by Jim Stanton. Motion passes
  • Motion to Fund $500 sponsorship for the South West Police Motorcycle Training Competition on April 22nd and 23rd by Lisa Campoy, 2nd by Ken Nelson. Motion passes
  • Peace officer memorial committee is requesting a donation of up to $500 to purchase blue lights that are used for the ceremony. Motion to fund up to $500 for blue lights for the peace officer memorial by Vian Gorgis, 2nd by Jim Staton. motion passes

  • Our next meeting will be on March 17th
