Several agencies will conduct International Roadcheck, Tuesday, June 6 through Thursday, June 8, 2017

– For Immediate Release –

Flagstaff, Arizona — International Roadcheck is an annual event which takes place in northern Arizona.  It will run from Tuesday, June 6 through Thursday, June 8, 2017. Since its inception in 1988, more than 1.4 million inspections have been conducted during the campaign. This gives Arizona Department of Public Safety (AZDPS), and its partners in the operation, an opportunity to educate the trucking industry and general public about the importance of safe commercial vehicle operation.

Enforcing commercial motor vehicle regulations along with engaging trucking companies and the public about safety practices, helps prevent the loss of lives and time resulting from collisions involving commercial vehicles. In Arizona, over 60,000 commercial vehicle inspections are conducted annually by local, state and federal inspectors with the end goal of reducing collisions through enforcement of traffic, commercial vehicle laws and public outreach. Over half of the 60,000 inspections are completed by troopers.

This year, the AZDPS, Arizona Department of Transportation (ADOT), the Arizona Trucking Association (ATA) and the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) will be conducting the International Roadcheck program. In addition to enhanced patrols, there will be fixed inspection locations along east and westbound Interstate 40, at milepost 182, within the rest area parking lots. Inspections will focus on load securement, seat belt use, safety and regulatory compliance. Inspectors will also be looking for reckless drivers of both commercial and passenger vehicles.

Media is encouraged to tour the commercial vehicle inspections sites on Tuesday morning. Media should schedule tours and interviews through the department’s Public Affairs Unit at pio_unit@azdps.gov. Media will experience, first-hand, the detailed work inspectors conduct to ensure highway safety though commercial vehicle enforcement.
