Flagstaff, Arizona — The Arizona Department of Public Safety (AZDPS) will participate in the annual Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance’s (CVSA) International Roadcheck enforcement campaign June 5-7, 2018, along Interstate 40 near Flagstaff.
Nationwide, International Roadcheck will deploy approximately 10,000 specially trained and certified officers and troopers over a 72-hour period, who will blanket North America’s roadways in an effort to prevent truck and bus accidents. This year, the focus will be hours-of-service compliance.
AZDPS Troopers will direct commercial vehicles, buses and trucks to stop at the east and westbound Parks Rest areas along I-40 at milepost 182. The Department’s specially trained inspectors will be conducting the North American Standard Level I Inspection , a 37-step procedure that includes an examination of both driver operating requirements and vehicle mechanical status. The vehicle inspection includes checking brake systems, cargo securement, coupling devices, driveline/driveshaft components, exhaust systems, frames, fuel systems, lighting devices, steering mechanisms, suspensions, tires, van and open-top trailer bodies, wheels, rims and hubs, and windshield wipers. Additional items for buses include emergency exits, electrical cables and systems in the engine and battery compartments, and seating.
In addition, roving patrols of troopers will assist by identifying commercial vehicles carrying hazardous materials in order to make sure they are in compliance with state and federal laws. The troopers will patrol along I-40 between mileposts 150-250.
According to CVSA, International Roadcheck is the largest targeted enforcement program on commercial motor vehicles in the world, with around 17 trucks and buses inspected, on average, every minute in Canada, the United States and Mexico during a 72-hour period. Since its inception in 1988, more than 1.5 million roadside inspections have been conducted during International Roadcheck campaigns.
“International Roadcheck is designed to help make the roadways safer for everyone by ensuring that commercial vehicle operators abide by state and federal laws. With increasing numbers of commercial vehicles on the road nationwide, specially training inspectors both here in Arizona and nationally will be working long hours to make sure these vehicles and their operators are safe to be on the road,” said AZDPS Major Brian Preston.
